THE MANSION: Game audio integration demo 2023
This 2023 horror game prototype serves as both my most complete work of audio post production and game audio integration to date, along with being my capstone project at George Brown College, which culminates everything I learned in the Sound Design & Production Postgraduate certificate program.
The project encompasses numerous aspects of audio post: it features original music, sound design for in-game characters, objects, and UI, dialogue recording and editing, robust mixing with attention to attenuation and reverberation zones, and rich ambiences meant to immerse the player.
The game is also a demonstration of my ability to oversee the entire game audio process. By integrating Wwise with Unreal Engine 5, I was able to begin creating a detailed hierarchy of audio objects I could then distribute throughout the game environment. Building off of free Unreal Marketplace visual assets, I was able to create narrative structure and gameplay elements to serve as a vehicle for my immersive sound. This included placing strategic emitters and trigger boxes to call upon specific sounds when the player is within radius. Each room of the mansion was given unique ambience, reverberation parameters, and music cues, which can switch with ease given the right game state.
I'm proud to say that I think this work represents my attention to detail and desire for immersive soundscapes that build on a relationship to the aesthetic features of the space. I was able to achieve everything I desired on a technical level, while still having room for creativity liberties with regards to the games narrative, music, and sonic set pieces.
This game demo was constructed in Unreal Engine 5 using free visual assets from the Unreal Marketplace. All audio integration was done through Wwise. Music composition, sound design, and dialogue manipulation was done in Ableton Live 11. All sound was crafted through a mixture of: original recordings on a Blue Bluebird SL Condenser Mic, field recordings from a Tascam DR-05X Handheld Recorder, manipulated samples from sound library's, and freeware synths like Spite Audio LABS and Ableton's Wavetable.
